Shoulder-Angel Wars

Galatians 5: 16 (NIV) So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.

I saw a new commercial recently which depicted a mother and son in the dairy aisle of the grocery store. He picked up a package, but put it down reluctantly when his mom shook her head, “No” to indicate she wasn’t buying it.

He puts the package down and sulks until he sees a carton of chocolate milk. “Can we buy this?” He holds the carton in front of her face.

As the mom reads the nutrition label, a little white milkman angel appears on her left shoulder and starts telling her how good the chocolate milk is for her child.

Not to be outdone, the little red milkman devil appears on her right shoulder, sipping a glass of chocolate milk. But instead of presenting a long list of negatives, he simply says, “I’ve got nuthin’.”  so the mom buys the chocolate milk.

It’s a humorous scenario, but it has a very positive application. Rather than making mindless choices, the Spirit can help us stop the spiral of habit and to weigh our options. whenever faced with a temptation.  That split second pause gives us the opportunity to make a CONSCIOUS decision to obey the Spirit’s nudging.

Awareness of what we do is half the battle – obedience is the other.

Lord, help me hear and listen to the voice of your Spirit each day, enabling me to make choices that will be glorifying to You. Amen!
