Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.” Deuteronomy 6:4-5 NIV
When I think of love, I think of brides and babies.
The bride’s love is a picture of anticipation of the future. All her emotions are heightened and her senses alive as she prepares to start a new life with her true love. Our love for Jesus should be the same – after all we are the bride of Christ and live in anticipation of an eternal future with Him!
Babies are soft and tender. We speak in hushed tones and kiss their fuzzy heads as we cuddle them in our arms. We watch in wonder and awe for hours at the miracle of life as they sleep. This too is a picture of our love affair with Jesus. We are loved as precious children – the creation of His heart. And as children we receive that love, returning it with perfect trust and contentment.
But there is at least one more picture of love we seldom think about when we picture love. It’s the picture of an older couple walking hand in hand down the street. They share a deep, abiding love that has endured tears and trials and still manages to survive – even thrive. It’s the day-to-day working kind of love that will last for eternity.. Thank you Lord for that enduring love.
Lord help me to love you today and tomorrow with excitement and anticipation; to love you with tenderness and deep joy; and to love you with abiding love through all the good and bad times of life until I’m home with you forever. Amen!
