Because we love, we give

“This is the message that you heard from the beginning: love each other.” 1 John 3:11 CEB

O. Henry wrote a classic Christmas short story called, “The Gift of the Magi.” In his tale, a young husband and wife sacrificed their most valuable possessions to buy a Christmas gift for the other. Della sold her luxurious, knee-length brown hair to buy a watch chain for Jim’s heirloom watch. But in the story’s ironic twist, Jim had sold his watch to buy a set of tortoise-shell combs for Della’s hair.

Though neither of them could use the gifts they received, O. Henry proclaimed them to be as  wise as the Bible Magi who gave costly gifts to Jesus out of their love for Him. Jim and Della learned what was really important. in life: Love for each other – a love so strong, they would sacrifice their cherished possessions to preserve it.

How far are we willing to go if we love others?
