Who will separate us from Christ’s love? Will we be separated by trouble, or distress, or harassment, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? But in all these things we win a sweeping victory through the one who loved us.” Romans 8:35,37 CEB
No matter how independent a child is, when they feel sad, tired or ill, they always come back to mom’s lap. They find comfort there that they cannot find anywhere else. Even if mom can’t take away the symptoms or discomfort they feel, her love brings warmth and even joy to their hearts.
Maybe that’s why Jesus seems closer to us during all those troubles listed in the verse above. Not because he comes closer to us, but because we seek out his loving arms and his comforting lap when we are facing life’s storms.
For those of us independent “me do” kids, it’s one of the few times we allow him to get close enough to us to sense his arms around us and to hear his heart beat. That’s when he gathers us close and assures us of his unconditional, eternal love. And those are the times we are most likely to take it in.
Father, thank you for that loving reassurance that you ate always there! Amen.
