There’s nothing like fresh-baked bread!

“Do your best to improve your faith. You can do this by adding goodness, understanding, self-control, patience, devotion to God, concern for others, and love. If you keep growing in this way, it will show that what you know about our Lord Jesus Christ has made your lives useful and meaningful.”        2 Peter 1:5-8 CEV

Mmmmm! There’s nothing like the smell of bread baking. My mouth waters even now as I remember visiting my in-laws home when Mom baked her weekly supply. Since it was a lengthy process, she started early in the morning, before everyone was up for the day.

She filled a three-gallon aluminum pan with her flour, then added her warm water, yeast, sugar, shortening and salt  mixture. Mom never measured the ingredients. She’d been doing it for so long, she just knew how much of each ingredient to add. As she kneaded the dough, she knew by its  texture if more flour was needed or if it was ready to rise.

By the time the dough rose for an hour or so,  the scent of yeasty goodness had permeated the house, tantalizing the taste buds with promises of more to come and luring us out of bed. I remember helping her to pan the dough, pinching off golf-ball sized pieces of dough for sandwich rolls and larger pieces for the loaf pans. By the time we finished, pans covered the entire kitchen table.

After another rising period, the bread went into the oven, a few pans at a time.  By the time the first pans came out of the oven, the irresistible aroma lured us all to the kitchen for a bite.. I’m sure Mom baked the rolls first because they were easier to sample.Once we slathered our bites with butter, she shooed us out of the kitchen to finish her work.

Our lives have a sweet aroma to God as He adds each ingredient necessary to develop us to our fullest potential. The aroma gets stronger as He helps us to grow through times of kneading and rest. He shapes us and tests us in the fire until our lives come out just right – meaningful, useful and flavorful, drawing those around us to God’s kitchen for a sample of His love.

Father, work in my life to  create a sweet savor that draws others to You! Amen.
