Stained glass lives

“Yours, LORD, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the majesty and the splendor, for everything in heaven and earth is yours. Yours, LORD, is the kingdom; you are exalted as head over all.”        1 Chronicles 29:11 NIV

The church I attended as a child had gorgeous stained glass windows on three sides of the sanctuary. I loved to walk by them and look at all the pieces, the colors and the designs.  But as beautiful as the windows were to look at, it was the magic of sunlight filtering through the colored glass that made them glow!

Many years later, I met an artist who demonstrated the process of creating beautiful stained glass pieces. With careful precision, he cut each little section of his pattern  from a specific color of glass, smoothing the edges, then foiling them as he prepared to solder his each piece together. Impressed with his skill and patience, I ordered two matching white stained glass doves to give as Christmas gifts that year.

The doves have since “flown” back to my house to live where they remind me of the great patience and skill our Creator takes to restore our lives.  He takes the broken pieces of our lives, our shattered dreams, and  the shards of our potential. From the sin-damaged panes, he creates his glorious pattern.

Choosing the pieces carefully, he cuts each one, shaping it to fit perfectly into his pattern. Grinding away the rough edges left by sin on  each piece, he surrounds it with his glory, then solders them together, creating a masterpiece from the sin-damaged shards.

It’s truly an awesome experience to be reclaimed and remade into the people Christ intends us to be. But the real beauty of our lives can only be seen when his light shines through us, like the sunlight filtering through those cathedral windows of my childhood.

Lord, may your greatness be seen as you shine through my life.Amen.
