The narrow gate…

“Go in through the narrow gate; for the gate that leads to destruction is wide and the road broad, and many travel it;  but it is a narrow gate and a hard road that leads to life, and only a few find it.”       Matthew 7:13-14 CJB

Some of the best books I’ve ever read begin with a trip through a narrow gate.

Think about it: – C. S. Lewis’ classic Narnia tales begin  when four youngsters enter a magical land where a lamp post marks the  gateway through a wardrobe. – The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgeson Burnett  is all about one such gate into an overgrown garden which heals the soul and body of those who enter it. – And who can forget Bunyan’s classic, Pilgrim’s Progress . Pilgrim’s journey begins when he chooses to enter the narrow gate which leads to the Eternal City.  –  Hobbit Bilbo Baggins begins an epic journey when the wizard, Gandalf,  and a motley assortment of dwarves enter his little, round front door into his Underhill home. – Even Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz finds a narrow gateway into Oz through a funnel cloud

The characters’ lives begin to change when they find the gates and walk through them. In most of the cases, the gates are overgrown with weeds or difficult to find, making the search an integral part of the plot. But in all cases, the gateway marks the single biggest change in the character’s life. Without that gate, the story wouldn’t be what it is.

So it is with us. We begin an epic journey  when we find that narrow gate of salvation Jesus speaks about. In many cases, the entryway into eternal life is almost impossible to find under normal circumstances, on our own. We probably aren’t even looking for it and have no intentions of walking through it or changing our lifestyles.

Yet in a moment of crisis, we pause long enough to see the narrow, hidden gate. And there it is, right in front of our eyes. All we have to do to change our lives is to enter the gate. To accept and believe in Jesus Christ as the Lord of our life.

If you’ve never entered that gate, I invite you to do it today. Take Jesus’s hand and walk on through into an adventure like no other! For the truth is, once you’ve entered the narrow gate of salvation through Jesus Christ, your life will change. It will become the adventure of a lifetime and your life story will never end.

Thank you Lord, Amen!
